About the former SS general Heinz Reinefarth who was mayor of Westerland from 1951 to 1964.

Among other things, Reinefarth was responsible for the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising, in which 20,000 to 50,000 civilians were shot by the troops under his command in the Warsaw district of Wola alone.
